STAY CLEAR! STAY SAFE!

Saturday February 28th
Ontario Power Generation’s ‘Water Safety’ day on Saturday of the Ottawa Boat & Sportsmen’s show remind people that Recreational activities near hydro stations and dams are dangerous.

Please, stay clear of hydroelectric stations, dams, shorelines and surrounding waterways. Hydro stations operate year-round and affect water flows and ice conditions. Water that looks safe can become treacherous in minutes and ice that forms near, or even several kilometers away can be dangerous. Obey all warnings, signs, booms and buoys. If you see water levels changing, move a safe distance away immediately.

The Science of Fishing
Steven J. Cooke, Ph.D., Department of Biology, Carleton University
(Great Outdoors Seminar Stage)

The seminar will focus on strategies that anglers can use to ensure that when fish are released they have the best chance for survival. In addition, he will also summarize some of the ongoing research projects in his lab, including some in eastern Ontario. There will be an extensive question period where anglers will be able to ask Dr. Cooke questions about fish biology and fisheries science – and of course, about science-based tips for improving your fishing!

Dr. Steven Cooke is a professor of environmental science and biology at Carleton University. His lab has conducted research on a number of prominent gamefish species including bass, bonefish, barracuda, pike, salmon and musky. He has published extensively on topics such as catch-and-release angling, fish migration, hydropower, and parental care. He has been awarded a medal from the Fisheries Society of the British Isles and an award of excellence from the Fisheries Management section of the American Fisheries Society. He is on the editorial board for two international journals and has just published his first book – on the biology of the centrarchid fish. Cooke is also an avid angler.

World’s First Fishing Boat for the Blind and Lawrence Euteneier (Great Outdoors Seminar Stage)

Lawrence and his Guide Dog, Maestro will take to the Seminar Stage once daily during the show.
Thursday 5:30, Friday 3:30, Saturday 4:00, Sunday 1:00.

Blind Fishing Boat - CBC Ottawa News

Lawrence Euteneier’s gradual loss of sight never stopped him from enjoying the sport of fishing. He was assessed as legally blind at the age of eight, and required the assistance of a guide dog by age of 25.

Lawrence earned his Masters in Environmental Studies from York University in 1994, and has applied his knowledge to create accessible environments for people with disabilities. On a personal front, Lawrence has applied his skill to his love of fishing resulting in the world’s first fishing boat that can be independently operated by a person without sight.

Lawrence’s commitment to throwing open the doors to the out-of-doors for people with sight limitations is his way of sharing his knowledge of the sport of fishing and boating with others who have limited or no sight. Lawrence publishes articles regularly about fishing techniques and related gear of interest to blind fishers. Lawrence also advises those in the fishing and outdoor business on how to make their products and services more accessible, and organizes Canadian blind fishing adventures for people without sight from around the world. Lawrence hopes some day to see blind fishing clubs and derbies throughout North America. After all says Lawrence, “fishing really is an ideal sport for people with limited or no sight since most of what you are doing is focussing on what you are feeling at the other end of your line – you only get to actually see the fish after they are caught”.
